The Repairer of Reputations is the title of the project I worked on during my bachelor’s thesis of game design at the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (University of Applied Sciences; exam through Professors Claus Wohlgemuth and Thomas Bremer). The title of the Thesis itself was The Narration of Anti Stories in Interactive Games, Using the Example of Robert William Chambers‘ Short Story „The Repairer of Reputations“, Adapted as an Adventure Game.

The thesis examines the literary trope of anti stories and of unreliable narration in particular – first in literature, later in digital games and finally in Chamber’s short story itself, being one of the earliest applications of the trope. The thesis concludes with the documentation of my game project.

This game project is a mod made with Harebrained Schemes‘ Shadowrun Returns Editor that narrates Chambers‘ short story in an interactive and narrative-systemic manner. The core of this game project is a Whodunnit, where the roles of witness, suspect, culprit, and victim are assigned randomly, each with a number of different clues to uncover. This results in a total of 327 different playthroughs only for the criminal case, each with naturally evolving and non-generic dialog.
